“A Message from the President”

On behalf of our Board of Directors and the members of the Halifax Employers Association, I would like to welcome you to our web site. We are very pleased that through this site our members and customers to the Port of Halifax will be provided with a variety of tools and resources that will make it easier to do business in the Port. As well, we will strive to continually update and improve this site so that its value to our members, their employees and our customers will only enhance with time.

The Halifax Employers Association, or HEA as it is more commonly known, is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to represent owners, operators, lines and agents and employers of labour in the longshore industry whose employees are represented by locals of the International Longshoremen’s Association in the Port of Halifax. The HEA has served the Port of Halifax since 1996, representing its members in collective bargaining and providing employee relations advice and guidance. It strives to negotiate efficient collective agreements and maintain positive employer/employee relations as the designated employer bargaining agent for the membership. The HEA also provides a broad spectrum of general human resources services and is responsible for the overall training of employees in the longshore industry in Halifax.

The Association plays a vital role in the daily operation of the working Port of Halifax and our staff is on-call around the clock to serve our members. Improving communication and providing useful tools, like this web site, can only serve to make the HEA more accessible while providing us with a means of reaching more people more efficiently.

We are very optimistic about the future for the Port of Halifax and look forward to its continued growth. We have the infrastructure and the capacity to accommodate growth and our goal is to make sure we have a stable, dependable and efficient workforce to sustain it. Through effective employee relations and a good working relationship with our employee representatives we can do just that.
